So, I am sitting at home at the weekend and I come across this documentary on, of all things, chickens!
Most of us have heard or used the expression "running around like a chicken with it's head cut off".
Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that this famous expression is actually based on a real event in American history.
It so happens that in Colorado, circa 1945, there was a poultry farmer that was getting ready to prepare his gaggle of birds for the slaughter. He began slinging the axe on several fowl victims, albeit successfully. However, when it came time to bring the same fate down on Mike, he continued to walk and squawk around after his head was literally cut off. To make matters weirder, a man by the name of Hope Wade came to town to have a look at this oddity and possibly promote it, in the same spirit as the famous Barnum shows. Mike made a world tour, visiting such places as the west coast of the US, Canada and Japan. His poor head was kept, pickled in a jar, so that people could see that he really did lose his noggin'!
What a world we live in.
